Guidelines for the Prevention of Perinatal Trauma

This guideline presents a much-needed opportunity for all maternity care professionals to change their practice to enable every woman to experience maternity care that could be less likely to cause them trauma – physiological and/or psychological.

Perinatal in this guideline refers to pregnancy, labour, birth and postnatal care for the woman, and their family however that may be comprised. Use this guideline at all times in your maternity care practice such that it becomes your automatic resource and is a natural part of your role at all times.

This guideline may also be used as a quality measure and/or quality improvement resource to assess your/your team/your organisation’s efforts at preventing perinatal trauma.
